DrAlienSmith reinvents the contact microphone
Share
With Gravity, DrAlienSmith offers a new approach to the contact microphone, designed for sound design, experimental textures, and atypical recordings.
Unlike a traditional microphone that picks up sounds in the air, the Gravity works directly in contact with a vibrating surface using a piezoelectric sensor. The result is often much rawer, more mechanical, and full of details that are difficult to achieve with conventional recording methods.
But the Gravity is not just a simple classic piezo microphone. DrAlienSmith introduces a new topology here, designed to offer a more balanced and usable response than many traditional contact microphones, which are often very aggressive or difficult to integrate into a mix.
The goal seems to be to retain:
- physical textures
- micro-resonances
- mechanical details
… while offering a more coherent and musical rendering.

The Gravity can therefore be used to record:
- metallic objects
- resonant structures
- machines
- experimental percussion
- prepared instruments
- organic textures
This is typically the kind of tool that is particularly interesting for:
- sound design
- electronic productions
- cinema
- field recording
- sound texture creators
In a production environment that is often very digital and controlled, this type of microphone allows for a much more physical and experimental approach to sound.
