Soyuz Silver 17: the newest addition to the 017 series arrives at Cool Kids Audio

Soyuz has just officially unveiled a new addition to its flagship 017 series: the Silver 17, a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone. At Cool Kids Audio, we're taking pre-orders now, so here's everything that makes this mic special.
The (brighter) little brother of the 017 TUBE
The Silver 17 shares its sonic DNA with the 017 TUBE, Soyuz's reference mic since day one: the same commanding low end, the same rich, generous mids. But Soyuz wanted to push presence and clarity further in the highs, for a sound that sits more easily in a modern mix without needing tons of processing afterward. Vocals, guitars, and keys gain in clarity and up-front presence, without ever becoming harsh.
According to David Brown, president and co-founder of Soyuz, the Silver 17 offers a more open take on the 017 signature sound, adding extra air and presence while keeping everything that made the series successful.
A completely redesigned capsule
The real technical breakthrough lies in the capsule. The Silver 17 introduces the S17E, Soyuz's very first edge-terminated capsule. On the original S17 (found in the 017 TUBE), the polarization contact runs through the center of the capsule. On the S17E, that contact is applied directly to the diaphragm and routed through the outer mounting ring β no more center screw, and therefore no obstruction at the center of the diaphragm, exactly where it's most sensitive. The result: a diaphragm that vibrates more freely, delivering an airier, more detailed top end.
This capsule draws inspiration from an extremely rare Soviet-era microphone, the LOMO 19A18 (barely 300 units were made in the 1960s, often compared to a Neumann C12 for its airy character), while still keeping the K67 geometry that underpins the entire 017 series.
Like every Soyuz microphone, the Silver 17 is made entirely in-house: hand-turned bodies, in-house wound transformers, fully point-to-point wiring, and a hand-selected military-grade 6ZH1P tube at the heart of the circuit.
