Audeze's SLAM™ technology: how to improve bass impact in planar headphones
Audeze has introduced SLAM™ (Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator) technology to enhance the impact and realism of bass in its high-end headphones. This innovation directly affects the airflow around the transducer to optimize the headphones' acoustic performance. The goal is to produce more physical and realistic bass without sacrificing the qualities for which planar magnetic headphones are renowned: precision, speed, and low distortion.
The challenge of bass in planar headphones
Planar magnetic transducers use an extremely thin diaphragm moved by a uniform magnetic field. This design allows for a very fast response and extremely low distortion, but it can sometimes produce bass that is perceived as less "physical" than on some dynamic transducers. Audeze therefore sought to improve the impact of low frequencies while maintaining the transducer's accuracy and linearity.
An acoustic modulator to control air pressure
SLAM™ technology relies on a system of precisely tuned acoustic channels integrated into the headphone structure, typically around the ring connecting the ear pads to the transducer. These channels allow for better control of the air pressure generated by the diaphragm's movement and modulate the low-frequency response.
In practice, these channels reduce pressure build-up and stabilize the airflow around the transducer, resulting in more linear behavior and a firmer, more dynamic bass.
More impact without artificially increasing the bass
Unlike simple equalization or acoustic tuning aimed at increasing the amount of bass, SLAM™ seeks instead to improve the quality and physical feel of the bass. The result is cleaner, faster, and more realistic bass, with more punch in the transients, while maintaining excellent transparency across the rest of the spectrum.
A technology featured on several Audeze headphones
SLAM™ technology is used on several recent models from the brand. It can be found in particular on the Audeze LCD-S20 , a closed-back headphone designed for producers and audiophiles, as well as on the Audeze LCD-5s , the latest version of the brand's reference planar magnetic headphones.
An evolution in the acoustic architecture of headphones
With SLAM™, Audeze continues to explore new approaches to improve the performance of its planar magnetic drivers. By working on the magnetic structure, diaphragm, and internal acoustics of the headphones, the brand seeks to push the boundaries of headphone sound reproduction, particularly in the bass range where physical sensation plays a crucial role in the listening experience.
