WaveForming drops to two subwoofers: Trinnov overturns its own rule

It is rare for a manufacturer to publish an article explaining that it got something wrong. Yet that is exactly what Trinnov did on 9 September, announcing that its WaveForming technology now works with just two subwoofers — after requiring four ever since the 2023 launch.

Trinnov's own wording leaves little room for doubt: “We said four subwoofers, and we meant four subwoofers.” That requirement was never arbitrary. It reflected a commitment to giving installers predictable, repeatable results, even at the cost of ruling out more modest configurations. But when the research team went back and tested precisely those ruled-out configurations, it found something else.

A subwoofer that works both sides of the problem

To understand why two subwoofers can be enough, you have to look at what WaveForming actually does. The technology does more than correct a frequency response: it treats subwoofers as acoustic tools that shape the entire low-frequency sound field in the room. Through very precise phase and amplitude management, every active subwoofer contributes simultaneously to generating the wavefront and absorbing unwanted acoustic energy.

This dual role — emitter and absorber at the same time — is what fundamentally separates WaveForming from conventional bass management. In the reference configuration, two front subwoofers generate the wavefront while absorbing reflections returning from the back of the room, while two rear subwoofers intercept those reflections earlier.

So the real question facing the research team was not whether front subwoofers could absorb: they always could. It was whether that absorption alone, without dedicated rear subwoofers, produced results good enough to genuinely belong in the WaveForming family. Trinnov's conservative position was that it did not. The measurements said otherwise.

What two subwoofers actually deliver

Two correctly positioned front subwoofers proved capable of managing enough of the room's low-frequency field to deliver up to 50% reduction in decay time below 100 Hz. The result was measured across multiple rooms, with different subwoofer models and across a range of listening configurations — consistent enough for Trinnov to make it an official new performance tier.

In practice, the front-only configuration brings:

  • up to 50% reduction in decay time below 100 Hz;
  • substantially smoother frequency response through systematic modal control;
  • meaningful improvement for one or two seats, or a compact listening area;
  • a straightforward upgrade path: add rear subwoofers later and recalibrate.

A second finding reinforced the first: multiple subwoofers driven by a single Altitude output channel turn out to be far more effective as absorbers than Trinnov's models predicted. That also eases the channel-count constraint on certain installations.

Not a replacement, an entry point

Trinnov is emphatic on this point, and it deserves to be passed on as stated: the new configuration does not make larger systems obsolete. Dedicated rear subwoofers retain two major advantages — better control of back-wall reflections, and more consistent bass across a wide listening area. With two front subwoofers, performance stays strongest around the calibrated listening position and falls off as you move away from it.

The performance gap is quantified, too: where the front-only configuration tops out at 50%, four-subwoofer systems typically reach 60 to 70% decay time reduction. The different configurations should therefore be read as cumulative tiers, not competing solutions.

Why this isn't a Single Bass Array

The comparison springs to mind naturally, and Trinnov heads it off. An SBA can genuinely improve frequency response consistency by exciting certain room modes less. But achieving real low-frequency absorption requires substantial passive treatment on the rear wall. Without it, decay times stay long.

WaveForming approaches the problem differently: both subwoofers are controlled simultaneously, each contributing to wavefront generation and active absorption. The same two-subwoofer physical footprint therefore achieves up to 50% decay time reduction. The distinction is one of kind, not degree: this is not about optimising the placement or response of two bass sources, but about actively controlling the low-frequency sound field.

Everyone gains, even without touching their setup

The two-subwoofer configuration is only part of this software release. The WaveForming algorithms have also been reworked for all existing installations. The filters have been refined to improve coherence between subwoofers and satellite speakers, for more natural bass integration. The core algorithm also delivers more predictable behaviour across a broader range of acoustic conditions, including difficult rooms.

Good news for existing users: no recalibration is needed. A simple Compute is enough to apply the improvements to an existing preset.

Availability

The new configuration and the algorithm improvements are available via software update on Altitude16, Altitude32 and AltitudeCI. Trinnov's technical page has been updated accordingly: the minimum subwoofer count for a WaveForming installation is now officially two, in a front-only configuration.

For studios and two-channel rooms, this may be the most interesting active-acoustics news of the year. A listening room with one or two seats, where rear subwoofers were impossible for reasons of space, design or budget, becomes a legitimate candidate. Trinnov explicitly describes this configuration as a viable long-term solution in its own right, not a stopgap.
