Dual-capsule figure-8 microphone

The DrAlienSmith Alien8 is a figure-8 dynamic microphone designed for low-frequency sources while maintaining a rich, clear, and detailed midrange. It excels on kick drums, bass amps, and guitar amps, delivering detailed, physical low end and a very distinctive presence.

The result is remarkably polished right out of the box: an almost "finished" sound that requires little to no EQ to naturally sit at the front of the mix. A microphone designed for efficiency without sacrificing character.

Dual capsule design

The Alien8 is based on an unusual architecture, using two 50mm headphone transducers as microphone capsules.

The upper capsule picks up sound from the front, while the lower capsule picks up sound from the rear. Each capsule operates in a figure-eight pattern, but like some ribbon microphones, the rear lobe has a different sonic signature than the front lobe.

This feature is exploited via a three-position selector. Top capsule alone: ​​brighter and more incisive sound. Bottom capsule alone: ​​more body and density. Capsules combined: ideal balance between depth and presence (our favorite setting).

Regardless of the setting selected, the directivity remains figure 8.

A unique color and character

Although it draws inspiration from certain ideas from classic microphones like the AKG D30 (dual capsule) or the Beyer M380 (headphone transducer), the Alien8 is neither a clone nor a reissue.

It has a unique, instantly recognizable sound signature, with a massive bass, an expressive midrange and a presence that greatly facilitates placement in a modern mix.

Design and manufacturing – version 2026

In 2026, the Alien8 adopts a new design. Its body has been completely redesigned and is now made of cast aluminum, using an industrial metal additive manufacturing process ( Laser Powder Bed Fusion ).

The result is a robust, precise microphone with a distinctive look, designed for intensive studio use.
