Subkick Microphone
The Submic takes up the classic model of the "subkick" microphone based on a speaker membrane. These microphones are used to record very low frequencies in conjunction with one or more other microphones that take care of the rest of the spectrum. They add body and punch to kick drums and guitar and bass amps.
This version by DrAlienSmith is based on a low-output 6.5" full-range speaker and is housed in a semi-open bamboo enclosure. The SubMic operates at a comfortable output level, so you can plug it into most mic preamps without the need for a DI. The SubMic also features a Neutrik XLR connector, a built-in mic stand, and comes in a padded vinyl gig bag.
The Differences Between DrAlienSmith's SubMic and the Original Yamaha Subkick
DrAlienSmith's version is much lighter and more compact, costs three times less, uses the same size speaker, has a similar output level, and maintains the same type of low-frequency response, while capturing more of the low-mids. All of this makes the SubMic more flexible than Yamaha's old Subkick.
